Visit Ugljan, Croatia: The Quiet Olive Island

What is Ugljan known for?

Ugljan is known for St. Michael's Fortress (Tvrđava sv. Mihovila), a 13th-century Venetian stronghold on a 265-metre hill above Preko (Source: Night of Fortresses, Croatian heritage-promotion initiative), the Franciscan monastery on the islet of Galevac just offshore, the tuna-fishing village of Kali, and the island's long olive-growing tradition dating to Roman times. Why does Ugljan feel quieter than other Croatian islands?

Ugljan has none of the infrastructure that concentrates crowds on better-known Croatian destinations. Much of the accommodation is in private apartments and rooms, and Kukljica's tourist board alone counts about 700 private beds (Source: Kukljica Tourist Board). How big is Ugljan, and how many people live there?

Ugljan is about 22 kilometres long but never more than about 3.8 kilometres wide, with an area of just over 50 square kilometres (Source: Wikipedia, Ugljan). Three municipalities share it, Preko in the north and centre, Kali on the east coast and Kukljica in the southeast. The 2021 census counted 3,556 residents in Preko, 1,585 in Kali and 628 in Kukljica, just under 5,770 in total and fewer than in 2011 (Source: DZS 2021 census final results, via the Wikipedia pages for Preko, Kali and Kukljica).
